About the role
The Safety Manager provides strategic leadership in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) systems and strategies,ensuring full compliance with Victorian legislation and WorkSafe Victoria guidelines. This role is responsible for fostering and promoting a strong safety-first culture across allMerriwa sites by delivering effective training, mentoring teams, embedding proactive riskmanagement practices, and driving early intervention initiatives to address hazards, behaviours, return to work, and emerging risks before they escalate.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Possess an open, influential, and engaging communication style, with the ability to buildstrong relationships across all levels of the organisation.\
- Be a truly human leader who can gain the confidence and trust of people at all levels of theorganisation and stakeholders.
- Demonstrate excellent knowledge of reporting procedures, record keeping requirements, and the effective use of safety management systems and digital reporting tools.
- Hold strong business acumen paired with a dedication to legal compliance, supported by comprehensive knowledge of the OHS Act 2004 (Vic), OHS Regulations, and relevant Australian Standards.
- Display a high degree of personal integrity, professional accountability, and commitment toa safety-first culture.
- Demonstrate strong analytical, problem-solving, and data-interpretation skills to support evidence-based decision-making.
- Be proficient in incident investigation techniques (e.g., ICAM or Root Cause Analysis) andcapable of leading thorough investigations that drive effective corrective actions.
- Show capability in early intervention, injury management, and return-to-work processes, ensuring timely support for employees.
- Identify opportunities for improvement and deliver positive change using continuous improvement principles and structured change-management approaches.
- Exhibit strong stakeholder engagement and collaborative working style, with the ability to influence and drive cultural and behavioural change.
- Demonstrate competency in designing, delivering, and evaluating safety-related training and capability-building activities.
- Maintain resilience, sound judgement, and calm decision-making in high-pressure or emergency situations.
- Be able to plan and prioritise whilst ensuring people are consulted and timelines are in line with business priorities.
Key Selection Criteria
- Tertiary qualification (minimum Cert IV) in OHS or related discipline
- Comprehensive knowledge of relevant Victorian Health and Safety legislation
- Experience in a safety management role, ideally within manufacturing or thedisability/not for profit sector
- RTW coordinator accreditation
- Proven ability to work in a collaborative team environment and demonstrated capacity to act independently within established guidelines, exercising discretion and sound judgment.
- High-level interpersonal skills, and a willingness to engage effectively with employees at all levels of the organisation.

Support a young person one-on-one to:
