Merriwa Industries proudly marked its 50-year milestone, celebrating five decades of creating meaningful employment opportunities for people of all abilities across its Wangaratta and Wodonga production sites.

The event was opened by Merriwa Industries’ newly appointed CEO, Helen Tobin-King, who welcomed guests and invited them to tour the packaging facilities—where more than 65% of the workforce are people with a disability. Helen highlighted Merriwa’s enduring mission as a social enterprise: to bring the dignity and purpose of work to people who may otherwise be left behind.

Founded in 1975 by a passionate local community, Merriwa began as a small volunteer-led workshop known as Pelican Products and Packaging. Today, it has grown into a thriving social enterprise employing nearly 300 people across diverse operations, including Packaging, Timber, Retail, Production Nursery, Gardening Services, and Community Services.

The celebration was attended by Member for Indi, The Hon Dr Helen Haines, who presented service awards to employees in recognition of their contribution to Merriwa. Dr Haines congratulated the team for their continued efforts to innovate and expand the capability of the business, driving both economic growth and social impact.

Merriwa Board Chair, Dr Christine Cunningham, said the milestone represents more than the passage of time.

“Merriwa began with a belief – that people of all abilities deserve the opportunity to work, grow and belong. Today, that belief is stronger than ever. We are immensely proud of the people, families, volunteers and partners who build this organisation and continue to shape its future.”

CEO, Helen Tobin-King, said Merriwa’s model demonstrates that inclusive employment drives both commercial and community value.

“Our success proves that when people are given the chance to contribute, incredible things happen – for individuals, for business and for our communities. We are celebrating how far we’ve come, and we are determined to keep opening doors for future generations. I am honoured to lead Merriwa, a place with a proud legacy, where everyone matters, where people can achieve their potential, earn a living and have purpose and dignity in their lives.“

Member for Indi, The Hon Dr Helen Haines, said, "This celebration is about honouring the people who have shaped Merriwa over the past 50 years. Merriwa’s success is built on a simple but powerful belief - that everyone deserves the dignity of work and the opportunity to thrive."

A highlight of the day was the 2024/2025 Service Awards, recognising the dedication and long-term commitment of Merriwa employees:
